NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Democrats are asking state election officials to remove an independent congressional candidate from November's ballot over allegations of voter fraud, and that an investigation take place.

The Democratic Party of Virginia said Thursday that its lawyer made the request in letters to the Attorney General and the Board of Elections.

The letters detail allegations that Republicans in the 2nd Congressional District faked signatures on petitions to help independent candidate Shaun Brown get on the ballot. The move has been seen as an effort by Republicans to split the Democratic vote in a tight race.

The signatures in question were collected by campaign staff for Republican U.S. Rep. Scott Taylor. He's running against Democrat Elaine Luria.

Brown is a former Democrat who lost to Taylor in 2016 and is running this year as an independent.

The Attorney General's Office says a special prosecutor is already handling the investigation, and they are in communication.
